Miscellany of Folk
Sinds het eerste optreden drie jaar geleden, is het Iers/Canadese trio Miscellany of Folk een welkome gast op festivals en in folkclubs van Canada en Europa. Hun optreden neemt je mee door een repertoire van vakkundig bewerkte songs en swingende traditionele instrumentals. In hun relaxte optreden vermengen de klanken van trekharmonica, fiddle, gitaar, mandola en bodhrán zich tot een aangename akoestische sound, aangevuld met vocals. Ierse muziek op zijn best en dan met een Canadese twist. Niet alleen in hun muziek maar ook in hun warme en humorvolle presentatie merk je de jarenlange ervaring van dit bijzondere drietal.
Billy Sutton (fiddle en mandola)Komt uit Harbour Grace op het Canadese eiland Newfoundland. Hij is daar als sessiun host een van de sleutelfiguren in de levendige music scene van het eiland. Een magische plek overigens waar de muziektradities van de Ierse immigranten in hun zuiverste vorm bewaard zijn gebleven. Zijn status als master fiddler werd onlangs nog eens onderstreept door zijn toetreden tot de line-up van de befaamde Ierse band Danú.
Eddie Costello (gitaar en lead zang) is afkomstig uit Cahir in het Ierse graafschap Tipperary. Met zijn soms rauwe maar altijd warme stem, weet hij luisteraars te boeien. En dat niet alleen met traditional songs maar ook met moderner en zelfgeschreven werk. Met zijn gitaar begeleidt hij de instrumentals op fiddle en trekharmonica op smaakvolle en pakkende wijze.
Benny McCarthy (trekharmonica) groeide op in Deelish in county Waterford. Hij was 13 toen hij onder het mentorschap van de legendarische speler Bobby Gardiner zijn carrière op trekharmonica begon. Geïnspireerd door Ierse spelers uit alle windstreken van het groene eiland verfijnde hij zijn speelstijl. En met succes; we kennen Benny als medeoprichter van de befaamde band Danú en als lid van het Raw Bar Collective.
